Jersey Day

Thank you to all who supported our Jersey Day fundraiser for the local football club. A total of €78 was raised on the day. Congratulations to Hollie Brennan on winning the vouchers for Tayto Park (thanks to Eleanor Harpur for the prize) and Luke Bailey on winning the €30 voucher for Kytler's Inn (prize kindly donated by Mary Brennan). MAYO NATIONAL SCHOOL-Pancake Tuesday

GRANDPARENTS DAY IN THIS ISSUE

From the 19th to the 23rd of January it was Mayo National Schools Car Pool Week. It was an astounding week for the school because altogether the car pooled one hundred and seventy three times. The Big Room Car Pooled ninety four times and the Small Room Car Pooled seventy nine times. The two rooms were in a competition against each other to see how many Car Pools could each room get and the Big Room won overall!! But all pupils won some prizes. We would like to thank Ciara from An Taisce who gave us some extra prizes. Well done everybody!!

On the 9th of January Gavin Condron our local Postman came into talk about his job. Gavin showed the children how to sort the post. Some people put their pencils in their post. On Monday Gavin delivered all the post back. We all had a fun day.

Important dates:
• First Confession, 2nd Class will make their First Confession with Fr.Murphy on Wednesday 25th of February. Starting at 1pm in the GP Room. Family are invited to attend.
• This year’s Book Fair will be in the GP Room from Thursday 5th of February to Wednesday 11th of February. It will be organized and run by 6th Class and Sandy.
• This year’s Parent-Teacher meetings will take place after school on Monday 9th – Wednesday 11th of February. Appointment times will be sent to parents the week before.
• The P.A would like to thank all the parents who attended the P.A. meeting on 21st of January. A reminder that this year’s Charity Ride will take place on Sunday 12th of April. All help and volunteering will be hugely appreciated.

On the 21st of January our brilliant pupils Josh and Jonah Kelly went to Culohill to participate in the Laois Cumann na mBun Scoil Handball Championships. Jonah won the under 11 boys and Josh won the under 13 shield. Jonah will be going to Wexford and representing Laois.
GRANDPARENTS DAY
On Tuesday 27th of January we had our annual Grandparents Day. Lots of Grannies, Granddads and Parents came in and we all had a great day. We did lots of activities as in key rings with Miss McCarthy, writing about our grandparents with Mr.Lalor. some lovely refreshments in the staff room while the children were making cards with Miss Kelly and lastly we did art with Sandy. Everybody had an absolutely wonderful day!

On Thursday the 11th of December we had our Christmas plays, which were very successful. First we had a whole school performance of "Let it go" and then we had our first play by the Junior Infants to 2nd class which went very well. Thanks to Karen Kelly for coming into the school and helping us with our plays. We hope everyone enjoyed and congratulations to the raffle prize winners. DVD's of the play have been given to every family in the school, extra copies can be ordered in January.

The cake sale was a hugh success. A big thank you the Parents Council. Loads of local people came and brought home lovely baking made by the parents. There was a lovely hamper won.

We went to the Dunamaise Theatre on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th of December. The Small room saw "The three little pigs" and the Big room went to see "A Christmas Carol". A big thank you to the Parents Council for organising and paying for the plays and the buses.

Trip to Abbeyleix Bog On Monday the 20^th October, the pupils from Junior Infants to 6^th Class went to Abbeyleix Bog for National Tree Day. Thanks to the bus drivers, we arrived there at approximately 10.30 am. There was lots of excitement as it was the Junior Infants’ first school trip. The two tour guides Ricky and Chris showed us lots of interesting things and everyone enjoyed seeing the bog and its nature. The children saw Bugingham Palace( Bee and Bee), Bats, a Pine Martian’s skull, insects, the lichens and mosses from the bog and all the different leaves and seeds from the trees. They also went on a boardwalk through the bog. We all arrived safely back at the school at about 1pm and everybody had a great experience.

In our first match we beat Newtown N.S, we lost our second match to Wolfhill. In our third game we lost to Barrowhouse and our fourth game we were victorious against Rushall. The team looked their place in the semi-finals where we beat Wolfhill in Stradbally. We played Barrowhouse on the 22^nd of October in O’Moore Park in the final. We played well but fell short by one point. Joshua Kelly and Brian O’ Sullivan were the captains. Joshua received the Fair Play Award in the final. Joshua Kelly, Brian O’ Sullivan, John Brennan, Jonah Kelly, Luke Bailey, Peter Grogan and Jamie Condron started. It was a whole team effort and for our hard work we went to Supermacs. Thanks Sir for you efforts.

On behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, thank you so much for your thoughtful donation of €455.00. It was so kind of you to donate the proceeds of your Carol Singing fundraising event to Make-A-Wish Ireland.

As you are aware Make-A-Wish grants wishes to children aged 3-17 who are living with a life-threatening

medical condition. When family life has been turned upside down by the intrusion of an illness, we feel it is so important to make the wish experience as magical as possible for both the child and their family. The wish gives them an opportunity to forget about hospitals, treatments, injections and even the illness itself, if only for a short time. But it is only with the help of generous people like you that we can make these wishes come true, so thank you very much.
